Description Technical Specs
The thangka, a Tibetan and Nepalese Buddhist painting using a variety of painting techniques on cotton or silk, functions as one of the principle meditational tools in Buddhist practice.

Tara is a Buddhist goddess with numerous forms. According to lore, she came into existence from a tear of Avalokitshvara (a bodhisattva who embodies the compassion of all Buddhas), which fell to the ground and formed a lake. Out of its waters rose a lotus, which revealed the goddess upon opening. She is a compassionate and aiding deity who helps men "cross to the other shore". She is the protectress of navigation and earthly travel, as well as of spiritual travel along the path to enlightenment.
The Green Tara was believed to be incarnated as the Nepali princess of the first Buddhist king of Tibet (the White Tara believed to be his Chinese princess). The White and Green Taras, with their contrasting symbols of the open and closed lotus, are said to symbolize the undending compassion of the deity who labours night and day to relieve suffering.
