Description Technical Specs

The thangka, a Tibetan and Nepalese Buddhist painting using a variety of painting techniques on cotton or silk, functions as one of the principle meditational tools in Buddhist practice.

Tara is a Buddhist goddess with numerous forms. According to lore, she came into existence from a tear of Avalokitshvara (a bodhisattva who embodies the compassion of all Buddhas), which fell to the ground and formed a lake. Out of its waters rose a lotus, which revealed the goddess upon opening. She is a compassionate and aiding deity who helps men "cross to the other shore". She is the protectress of navigation and earthly travel, as well as of spiritual travel along the path to enlightenment.
The White Tara was incarnated as the Chinese princess. She symbolizes purity and is often represented seated with legs crossed, holding a fully bloomed lotus. She is also usually shown with a third eye on her forehead, as well as eyes on the soles of her feet and the palms of her hands (in this representation she is called "Tara of the Seven Eyes").
